ANR Call Flash JO2024 : the GIRAFE project funded !

The French National Research Agency (ANR) has published in early spring 2019 a call of tender "ANR Flash JO2024" for securing the next Olympic Games in France. EVITECH has co-submitted the GIRAFE project. GIRAFE has now been selected for funding.

With the next Olympic and Paralympic games in paris in 2024, France will face a major security issue, with a series of sport events, broadcasted in the entire world, and mixing important personalities as well as large crowds. The worldwide history of Olympic Games and Sports has unfortunately already left traces of painful events, that we have the responsibility not to let happen again here. On the basis of a sociological study of these risks, and to address this issue, the GIRAFE project proposes to develop algorithmic solutions of crowd supervision from CCTV video feeds covering these public areas. In particular, these algorithms will allow to warn authorities of zones where crowd formations can become dangerous, to follow crowd flows and anticipate potential struggling, and also to detect abnormal cases inside this crowd, such as an individual with a suspect walk, people running, of people carrying a luggage and laying it, and to track the authors until a possible arrest. Tools created by the project will help the intervention of law enforcement riots, and will optimize the use of security teams, their resources being limited and critical for such a large event. The human operator will stay the only decision maker of which actions to trigger when an alert occurs. Juridical and societal aspects bound to these video processing algorithms will be studied and taken into account, in order to ensure the respect of the French legal framework, as well as the GPDR, and keep the Games a fiest !
