Dedicated to public spaces security, or to private sites security, many performing video analytics functions are available through EVITECH LYNX and JAGUAR solutions. But what is the most efficient way for their exploitation ? What is common between fire detection, intruder detection, behavioral analysis, people counting, and detection of an armed person in crowd ?

FenceEVITECH has finalized the purchase order for the protection of the perimeter of a large international research center in Europe. Close to a secondary road, this site has a complex perimeter with many small peculiarities. Thermal uncooled cameras will monitor the site single fence, for detecting by day and by night any intruder through or over the fence, including those using an elevator. Detection drives color domes in order to zoom at detected targets.

In a region with an hostile climate, this project is the issue of a long study on the site, with a review, case by case, of each peculiarity, in order to assess each camera positions.

It is always preferable to study the camera implantation before the works, in order to check these camera positions to ensure the detection, and the possible obstacles to the camera view, such as small walls, vegetation, buildings, doors, containers, and storage, close to the site border.

Last, the fence itself (cf. image) can constitute an obstacle depending on the camera position. For example, in the image here, the corridor is under a good surveillance, but the corner at the end on the side is not visible. When studied on a map viewing a plane view of the site, we could imagine that this corner is in the camera cone, and that the camera views after the corner. When confronted to this situation in three dimension, we see that the thickness of the fence metal hides completely the corridor corner.


RelianceEvitech delivered in January 125 Jaguar licenses for the perimeter protection of an important Oil & Gas refinery. With a wire fence of several kilometers, these installations, partly quite ancient, have different areas of various sensitivity, and different nature :

  • stocks of raw or refined products, which can be targets of an attack, even though the impact of such would be mostly dramatic (in case of a broken or pierced tank, an expansion area at the ground level retains all the product locally, avoiding any propagation),
  • process tools that are not vulnerable by themsleves, but whose deterioration would be penalizing for the operator, due to the delay of repair or replacement.

Indeed, some Oil & Gas process equipments are produced in a such small number that one needs sometimes 2 years before delivery after a purchase order.

The choice of a thermal camera technology was priviledged by the integrator, an important international installation group, to get rid of vehicle's lights effects when moving at the site perimetry.

Before, tests driven over some parts of another refinery in India, at the neighborhood of driving sand tracks used by trucks, had showned that color cameras, even of the latest generation, could produce a switch from Black & White to Color (and reverse), when being confronted to the lights of a vehicle in the scene (breaking the continuity of surveillance and detection), or moving colored light spots in vehicle's reverse direction (able to produce false alarms).

Due to the pandemy, social distance regulation have been defined by the authorities. A first threshold was often set to very small groups (2-3 people) during the lock period. The limit has now been relaxed to groups of e. g. 6 or 10 people, but different thresholds exist, depending on the states, and also on the regions. In public transports, a threshold can also be set, e. g. to limit the use to 50% of the seats (one seat over two should be empty).

For satisfying these requirements, EVITECH has added new functions in its LYNX product to demonstrate the acuteness of the detection of such groups. Counting and density mesure are now well-assessed applications installed on many projects (Euro Fan Zones, Festival of Lights, Paris feasts, Train stations, Airports, Cities, ...), and inside public transports wagons. On this basis, the detection of groups has been developped and then demonstrated in several POCs.

After these experiences, these applications ar now being installed widely, they allow an automatic control of the density thresholds, with a high flexibility. At every place where the limits are not respected, it is possible to send LEAs to enforce the rules, and thus to avoid the extension of the disease. This applies in public transports, as well as around city high frequentation places.
